Banarasi Silk Sarees - Finest Sarees Of India
Imagine yourself in a ravishing red Banarasi saree for your wedding or in a summery pure silk Banarasi saree for your best friend’s D-day. These sarees are more than fabrics. They are an emotion, a love that passes down from one generation to the next, keeping you connected to your roots. Banarasi sarees can be of different types.
-
Kadwa - It is one of the most popular and elaborate crafts used to create Banarasi silk sarees. Like Jamdani, each motif is separately woven onto the fabric and requires a separate shuttle without leaving any loose thread at the back. It allows weaving intricate motifs in different shapes, sizes, and colours onto the same fabric, making it laborious. However, it gives the saree an embossed effect.
-
Tanchoi - This technique is said to have been introduced by Chinese traders in the 19th century. The Taneira Tanchoi Banarasi sarees are handcrafted by interweaving intricate motifs in delightfully vibrant hues. There are no floats on the back. The threads used for weaving these sarees are twisted two-ply Mulberry silk yarn that is locally known as “Katan.” These are interwoven in warp and weft, creating small patterns all over the body.
-
Brocade - The brocade technique of weaving Banarasi silk sarees flourished during the Mughal period. They are crafted using silk yarns, and the resultant fabric is always thick. The weave has floating threads, which give it a lustrous look and sheen. The Taneira weavers use meticulous graphing, punching and weaving techniques to create these regal and luxurious sarees.
-
Extra weft Cutwork - This technique is also commonly known as ‘Phekua’ and has an additional weft journey throughout the length of the saree. It appears only where the design demands while the rest of it hangs at the back of the fabric. Once the Banarasi saree is fully woven and comes out of the loom, the extra yarns are manually cut by the women of the house. The cutwork technique is more about big, bold patterns and intricate lines that are difficult to create.
-
Meenakari - The meenakari technique is also very elaborate and lengthy. An additional coloured Resham thread is introduced in the weaving pattern. It adds different colours to the body of the Banarasi saree apart from the zari.
-
Konia - It is an elaborate corner motif created above the pally on either side using the extra weft technique using gold, silver or silk thread. The patterns are created diagonally while weaving and thus require a more seasoned weaver’s finger.
What’s Special About Banarasi Sarees?
-
The pride of India, Banarasi sarees have become a popular name when it comes to Indian wear across the globe.
-
Banaras, or Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh, has been a centre of silk and cotton weaving since ancient times and gives the saree its name.
-
Born in the little alleys of this river town, on looms that tell stories of generations of weavers, pure Banarasi silk sarees represent Indian heritage at its finest.
-
Stunning motifs and elaborate patterns are handcrafted to add a touch of love every time you drape yourself in these sheer beauties.
-
Techniques like Tanchoi, Kadwa, Brocade and extra-weft are used with rich coloured threads to create these gorgeous fabrics. These skills have been developed, nurtured and perfected over centuries resulting in a craft that is untainted and pure.
